Dr. Martin Weihrauch, founder and CMO of Smart In Media, opened the new seminar series “Future Medicine: Seminar on AI for Healthcare” at the University of Cologne with exciting insights into medical software development. As a hematologist and oncologist, he shared his expertise in AI and software development and presented to students and faculty how AI can efficiently and accurately complement the skills of physicians. In addition, Dr. Weihrauch gave insights into the medical software development of Smart In Media. The interactive presentation led to lively discussions and promoted the exchange between industry and science. The seminar was organized by the Bozek Lab under the direction of Prof. Dr. Katarzyna Bozek, which deals with the data science of bioimages, together with Gateway Excellence Start-up Center of the University of Cologne.
At the Surgical Pathology Education Day 2024 of the University Health Network in Canada, we were sponsor, exhibitor and player in the program around transplantation medicine. Don van Dyke, General Manager USA, presented our PathoZoom® LiveView MACRO system at Toronto General Hospital.
With PathoZoom® LiveView Macro, you can document the view of a specimen at the cutting station with photos or transmit it live to colleagues via video stream. Surgeons can interact with the cutting station directly from the OR. The macroscopy images can then be viewed together with the histology during reporting. By simply scanning the barcode, they are automatically added to the case. In this way, the pathologist has histology and macroscopy together in one place.
The 25th Bamberg Morphology Days were a great success! Our team was in action in many places: at our joint stand with Hamamatsu Photonics Deutschland GmbH, at the Digital Pathology compact course … In many demos, we presented our innovative systems for Digital Pathology in a practical way. Anyone interested could scan their own slides at our stand and then diagnose them using our systems such as PathoZoom® Scan & LiveView or PathoZoom® Digital Lab. This special offer to try out the complete modern pathology workflow for yourself on-site ensured that our stand was bustling for two days.
The gaps in the German healthcare system are enormous. There are shortages of specialists, mountains of paper instead of digital files, and vast amounts of unused data potential. Digitalization offers many opportunities to close them. The focus of the “Digital Health Conference 2023” in Berlin was how Germany can achieve this. Many players from politics, business, hospitals, medical practices, and the care sector participated.
Martin Weihrauch, M. D., Chief Medical Officer and founder of Smart In Media, contributed his expertise to the panel discussion “Health Made in Germany: exciting foreign markets for digital healthcare solutions”. He gave an exclusive insight into our success story as an international industry leader for digital pathology and named our success factors and best practices for global expansion.
Dr. Weihrauch paid particular attention to successful corporate partnerships in combination with technical excellence that have enabled Smart In Media to achieve sustainable expansion. Exciting discussions and insightful moments at MEDICA2023: Martin Weihrauch, M. D., founder and Chief Medical Officer of Smart In Media, inspired on stage with his presentation “Will AI replace the pathologist”? Despite the hustle and bustle of the trade fair, this session by Smart In Media and Hamamatsu attracted an impressive number of participants, reflecting the great interest in this topic.
The content – insights into AI development, resulting opportunities for medicine, and the use of ChatGPT for pathologists – sparked exciting discussions. The visitors’ questions underlined their interest and the relevance of AI in pathology. This is a great incentive for us to continue to drive forward the implementation of digital pathology solutions for beginners and advanced users with our PathoZoom® systems.
Dr. Weihrauch and Corina Turner, Head of Marketing, also visited our partners from Hamamatsu at their stand. During the presentation of the NanoZoomer S20 scanner, they and the Hamamatsu team discovered that visitors are enormously interested in digitalizing the pathology workflow. These conversations underlined the growing enthusiasm of the medical community for innovative solutions that bridge the gap between technology and healthcare.
How quickly and easily pathologists can bring their microscope into the digital age was demonstrated by our Product Manager Amine Belaadel at the expert meeting “Digital Pathology made easy.” After an introduction to the topic of Digital Pathology and presentation of the digital workflow, things quickly got practical: Participants worldwide experienced live how quickly slides can be scanned at the microscope using the PathoZoom® Scan & liveView Smart In Media solution or broadcast live to colleagues via video stream. In this way, pathologists can easily look through the microscope with colleagues at other locations and evaluate cases together – for quick second opinions, for frozen sections, or for digital tumor boards.
“Liverpool Pathology 2023” was the 14th joint meeting of the UK Division of the International Academy of Pathology and the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, with colleagues from Belgium, Ireland, and the Netherlands also in attendance.
At the 18th Panhellenic Congress of Pathological Anatomy in beautiful Volos, we presented our breakthrough technologies for Digital Pathology for the first time in Greece. Together with our partners from ANTISEL, we also had many insightful discussions with the members of the Greek Pathology Association, participated in seminars, and listened to lectures from prominent speakers about the future of pathology laboratories in Greece.
It became clear that our innovative systems are paving the way for a new era in Greece. They offer superior and repeatable work quality, significant time savings, increased staff productivity, and a seamless transition to digitalization.

We returned from ECDP 2023, the European Congress on Digital Pathology in Budapest, with many new impressions. Together with the scanner manufacturer Hamamatsu, we presented in our hands-on workshop an 8-step plan for the implementation of Digital Pathology in institutes to numerous participants. Corina Turner, Head of Marketing Manager at Smart In Media, also explained the benefits of digital diagnostics from more efficient workflows to new business models for modern labs.
We were pleased to make many new contacts and maintain existing ones: at our live demos and at the booth of our partners from Hamamatsu and Fraunhofer IIS. And we were excited about the new scanners and will test them all in-depth for you.
Scanning slides, diagnosing digitally, and sharing images with colleagues for a second opinion in the blink of an eye: many pathologists visited our booth at the annual meeting of the German Society of Pathology in Leipzig, and saw just that. They experienced live how Digital Pathology works and how even beginners can quickly benefit from all the advantages. Fur this purpose, we had set up a modern diagnostic workflow together with Hamamatsu Photonics Germany, which was met with great interest on all days.
At the XXXI Congreso Nacional de la SEAP-IAP in Seville, SIM Team Spain was on site with our cutting-edge digital pathology solutions. Our booth was bustling with activity: Dozens of pathologists stopped by to learn first-hand all about the systems that simplify routine diagnostics. A highlight was Dr. Jose Rolando Ortega Ramirez’s live diagnostic sessions using our systems. Each, developed by physicians for physicians, makes routine diagnostics much easier, faster, and more effective for pathologists.
For example, the Congress of the Sociedad Española de Anatomía Patológica was a great success for us. We were repeatedly confirmed that in times of increasing demand for Digital Pathology solutions, we are in an excellent position to offer our advanced technical solutions. Because our innovative solutions help pathologists at every stage to optimize their workflows and provide better patient care.
The Histologica in Oberhausen was again the meeting place mainly for laboratory staff. On site, we exchanged ideas with MTAs about the advantages of digital pathology for the entire workflow and how employees can be prevented from having to cover long distances. In addition, we maintained contacts with scanner vendors in order to be always well informed for our customers in this area as well.
The ADA Lovelace Center for Analytics, Data, and Applications and the Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg invited us to the “Conference on Optimization and Machine Learning in Industry.” Our Chief Medical Officer, Martin Weihrauch, M. D., and CEO, Dr. rer. nat. Detlef K.-H. Finkler, were thrilled to participate in such a groundbreaking event highlighting AI’s importance in healthcare.
Dr. Weihrauch, together with Michaela Benz, Chief Scientist at Fraunhofer IIS, gave a presentation on the application of AI in medicine, specifically in pathology.
The conference provided an excellent platform for experts to discuss AI’s latest advancements and potential benefits for various industries. Our team had the opportunity to learn from other experts and share their experiences, furthering our commitment to applying cutting-edge technology to improve healthcare.
Dr. Detlef K.-H. Finkler, CEO of Smart In Media AG, was officially introduced as the new industry representative for education at the Winter School of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland. At the three-day event, held under the motto “Unleashing the edge power of pathology,” pathologists, scientists, and students learned about new research results, techniques, and trends such as modern microscopy and sequencing technologies, digital pathology or artificial intelligence in pathology.
It was an honor for our team to participate in this event, and we look forward to our continued partnership with the Pathological Society of Great Britain & Ireland.
The Bamberg Morphology Days were THE meeting place for all pathology enthusiasts in the D/A/CH region. This year, we were on site with a large team and presented our solutions for the laboratory workflow.
Especially our PathoZoom® Scan & LiveView system left the visitors amazed again and again. Many were amazed at how quickly they could use it to manually scan at the microscope and also stream their microscope view live to colleagues. Using their smartphone or tablet, guests could look directly and live with us through the microscope.
Those who want to delve deeper into Digital Pathology tested our PathoZoom® Digital Lab diagnostic platform, which we could connect directly to the new NanoZoomer S20 from Hamamatsu. In this way, visitors were able to experience the remarkable speed and accuracy of the newly developed scanner.
Also with us at the booth was the team from Fraunhofer IIS, whose AI-based MIKAIA software caused great excitement, especially among the researching pathologists. A direct insight into what AI can do for pathology in routine diagnostics was provided at the workshop with our Chief Medical Officer, Martin Weihrauch, M.D.
At the 2nd Innsbruck Pathology Symposium at the Medical University of Innsbruck, we enjoyed being represented with our booth. Invited by the Tirol Kliniken, the Austrian Society of Pathology, and DONKO, we presented our digital pathology solutions to the participants under the motto “Functional Insights.” In addition, we provided visitors with insights into the modern, digital workflow in the pathology laboratory.
